My eldest son and I share a love for baking. So when I found Rosanna Pansino’s “Nerdy Nummies” YouTube channel, suddenly my son and I found ourselves in baking heaven! Surely most of you have seen her channel. If not, you definitely should because it’s not your typical baking show. She did a post called, “Camouflage Deer Hunter Cupcakes” and it inspired us to get creative with our own cupcakes! We chose to apply this concept for Star Wars cupcakes!
Things you’ll need:
- Ziplock bags or icing bags
- A #2 icing tip. #3 can also work
- White cake mix
- Food coloring of your choice
- Baking chocolate
- 1 container of prepared white icing
First you need to choose the colors you want your cupcakes to be, then add food coloring to separated batches of prepared cake batter. Fill each color you chose into separate bags. Cut a small tip off the bottom corner of bag then fill muffin cups by dropping batter in dots and layering your way until you reach the top. Mistakes are welcome 🙂 They’ll still turn out fabulous!
When you’ve finished layering, it should look something like this
Next, you bake per box directions. While baking, color the icing to the color(s) of your choice.
Now we begin working on our cupcake toppers! We of coarse chose Darth Vader as our cupcake topper and took Rosanna’s advice and printed some Vader heads off the computer and traced them with melted chocolate. We used a glass bowl and filled it with the chocolate and simmered it over a pot of water on low heat. After chocolate has melted, fill chocolate into a bag and cut out the tip so you can insert your #2 tip. Tape pattern onto a baking sheet, then tape plastic wrap over pattern, making sure plastic is as flat as possible. Next, trace chocolate over printed pattern and place in freezer to harden.
By now, your cupcakes have probably finished baking, here’s how ours turned out!
Having allowed your cupcakes to cool for at least ten minutes, add your colored frosting. After toppers have completely hardened, add them on top of your frosted cupcakes and enjoy!
